Choosing the Right Pillow
How to Choose the Right Pillow
A good night's sleep starts with a good pillow. It sounds obvious, but the right pillow can make a surprising difference to how comfortable you are in bed, and there is rather more to choosing one than simply plumping it up and hoping for the best.
Do you like to sink into your pillow? Do you prefer something with a little more support? Perhaps you love the feel of natural feather and down, or perhaps you'd rather have a beautifully soft synthetic alternative.
Here at Beaumont & Brown, we make pillows for all of these preferences. So, if you're not quite sure which one is right for you, here's a little guide to help you on your way...
Savoy: our all-rounder
Our Savoy pillow is the one for those who want a little bit of everything.
Filled with 70% European duck feather and 30% duck down, it combines the support of feather with the softer, more luxurious feel of down. The filling is arranged with the feathers kept in a central pocket and down around the outside, giving you a supportive core with a softer surface.
It's a particularly good choice if you like to sit up in bed to read or watch television, as it has enough structure to support you, while still feeling comfortable when you're ready to sleep.
In other words, it doesn't make you choose between support and softness; you get both!
Savoy Pillow, from £65
Best for: those who like a supportive pillow with a soft, comfortable feel.
Duck Down: for the sink-into-it crowd
If your idea of a perfect pillow is something wonderfully soft and cloud-like, our Duck Down pillow is the one to look at.
It is filled with 100% pure duck down, with no feathers at all, creating a very soft pillow that moulds around your head rather than holding a particularly firm shape. It is made in the UK with a 300 thread count cotton casing and is available in Standard, King and Square sizes.
Down is naturally light and lofty, so this is a good choice for anyone who prefers a softer, more enveloping pillow rather than something with a lot of resistance.
We often recommend using two together, too - one on top of the other - for a little extra height and support without losing that lovely softness.
Duck Down Pillow, from £100
Best for: those who like a soft, luxurious pillow you can sink into.
Microfibre Anti-Allergy: soft without the feathers
Not everyone wants a natural filling, and that's where our Luxury Micro-Fibre Anti-Allergy pillow comes in.
Made in the UK and filled with a high-quality 'feels like down' microfibre, it has been designed to offer the softness and spring of a natural pillow without the natural filling. It is also machine washable, making it a practical choice for everyday use.
The filling and casing are designed to create a supportive pillow while keeping that soft, comfortable feel. It's a particularly good option if you prefer a synthetic filling or are looking for an anti-allergy pillow.
And, importantly, choosing an alternative to feather and down doesn't mean having to compromise on comfort.
Microfibre, from £27
Best for: those who prefer synthetic fillings, or are looking for an anti-allergy option.
So, which pillow is right for you?
There isn't really a universal answer. The best pillow is the one that feels right for the way you sleep and the level of support you prefer.
As a general guide:
Want support with a softer finish?
Go for the Savoy. The feather centre provides structure while the down surround gives a softer feel.
Prefer a very soft, luxurious pillow?
Try the Duck Down. With 100% duck down and no feathers, it is our softest natural option.
Prefer a synthetic or anti-allergy filling?
The Micro-Fibre Anti-Allergy pillow offers a soft, down-like feel with the practical benefits of a synthetic filling.
And don't forget that you don't necessarily have to stick to one type throughout the bed. Some people prefer a firmer pillow underneath with a softer one on top, giving you support underneath and that lovely sinking-into-bed feeling on the surface.
A small detail that makes a big difference
Whatever filling you choose, it's worth protecting your pillows properly. Our zipped pillow protectors provide an extra layer between your pillow and pillowcase, helping to keep everything fresh and protected.
Zipped Pillow Protectors, from £10
Because while we can't promise that the right pillow will make you get out of bed in the morning, it can certainly make staying there rather more appealing!
